If you are an Indian applicant with a 700 GMAT and five years in Bengaluru or Pune, and London Business School sits at the top of your shortlist because the UK lets you stay and work without a lottery, one date should change how you read that shortlist. From 1 January 2027 the UK Graduate visa shrinks from two years to 18 months. Every applicant who enrols at LBS from the 2026 intake onward will finish under the shorter rule. This post is for anyone weighing an LBS MBA from India on three things: the visa, the fees, and the European job market the degree actually opens.
What the 18-month rule changes
The Graduate route is being cut from two years to 18 months for applications made on or after 1 January 2027, according to Davidson Morris. The change was first announced in the May 2025 Immigration White Paper and confirmed in the October Statement of Changes. Applications made on or before 31 December 2026 still receive two years. Only PhD holders keep three.
Do the dates against the LBS calendar. A student who starts in August 2026 and takes the 15 month exit finishes in late 2027. The 21 month exit finishes in spring 2028. Both apply for the visa after 1 January 2027. If a forum thread or an older admissions blog tells you LBS graduates get two years, that is true only for people who applied before the cut.
Eighteen months is still a real runway. You can work for any employer without sponsorship during it. But it is one full recruiting cycle and a half, not two, and any plan that says "I will network my way into a sponsor in year two" now has less room.
Why 18 months still beats the US for most Indian applicants
The honest comparison is not 18 months against 24. It is 18 months against a US system where OPT is employer-agnostic but the H-1B step is not. The September 2025 proclamation attaching a USD 100,000 fee to new H-1B petitions changed what a US employer is willing to pay for a first-year hire, and we have tracked the fallout in our H-1B fee analysis for MBA applicants. In the UK there is no lottery and no six-figure petition fee. There is a salary threshold and a sponsor licence, and that is a more predictable problem.
The contrarian point: the visa does not get you a job. It buys you time to convert one. For LBS, where most offers arrive before graduation, the 18 month window is a safety net, not the main plan.
What the Class of 2025 numbers actually say
Clear Admit's summary of the LBS Class of 2025 employment report covers 488 graduates with a 98% reporting rate. Of these, 88% received an offer within three months and 86% accepted one. Mean base salary was USD 123,373, and 83% of accepted offers carried extra compensation such as bonuses.
The sector split is where you should spend your time:
- Consulting: 40%, mean base USD 132,671.
- Finance: about 25% (the text says 25%, the table says 26%), mean base USD 125,357.
- Technology: about 21 to 24% (the text and table disagree), mean base USD 111,776.
- Diversified sectors such as industrials, consumer, energy and healthcare: 11%, mean base USD 117,148.
Consulting, finance and technology together account for roughly 86 to 90% of the class. That is the sense in which the LBS machine is a three-sector machine. If your post-MBA goal sits outside those three, the school can still work for you, but you will be building more of the route yourself.
Geography matters just as much. Some 43% of the class took jobs in the UK, 12% in South East and East Asia, 12% in North America, 11% in Africa and the Middle East, 10% in Latin America, and 8% in the rest of Europe. South Asia was 2%. Also worth knowing: 45% of graduates changed sector and 44% moved location, so LBS is a genuine switching school, per the same report. The LBS career impact page confirms the headline 86% acceptance figure and names Amazon, Google, McKinsey and Morgan Stanley among recruiters.
If you are an IT services engineer targeting UK consulting
This is the profile the consulting number was built for. At 40% of the class and the highest mean base, consulting is where LBS converts hardest. Offers land in the first year, so your sponsorship conversation with the firm starts before graduation and the Graduate visa becomes the bridge rather than the plan.
The sponsorship hurdle is lower than most Indian applicants fear. Per Tarve, the general Skilled Worker threshold is GBP 41,700, and new entrants, including people currently or recently on a Graduate visa, can qualify at the higher of 70% of the going rate and GBP 33,400. MBA consulting salaries sit far above either number. The binding constraint is whether the employer holds a licence and wants to use it, not the pay floor. Check the current figures on gov.uk before you rely on them, because the rules have moved twice in two years.
If you are a finance professional eyeing the City
Finance is the second largest sector, but the route is narrower. Banking and PE recruiting leans on the summer internship, which means the 21 month exit. Graduating in spring 2028 and applying for the visa then gives you an 18 month window that runs to late 2029. That works, but you have paid for six extra months of London living, which our LBS fees breakdown puts in the range of GBP 19,500 to 31,500 across the programme. Tuition itself is GBP 123,950 and is flat regardless of your exit point.
If your target is US banking, LBS is the wrong lever. The US offers are a small slice of a class where only 12% went to North America.
If you plan to return to India
South Asia took 2% of the class. That is not a verdict on Indian employers, but it is a signal that LBS recruiting is not built for India-return roles. If your plan is Mumbai or Bengaluru within two years, the visa change barely touches you and the question becomes whether a GBP 150,000-plus all-in spend beats a domestic programme. We compare that directly in ISB vs LBS for Indian applicants, and the one year alternative in INSEAD vs LBS.
Common questions Indian applicants are asking
Does LBS still give a two year UK work visa? No, not for anyone applying from 1 January 2027. That is the UK government's rule, not an LBS policy. The 2026 intake and every intake after it will receive 18 months on the Graduate route, unless they hold a doctorate.
What happens after the 18 months? You need an employer to sponsor you onto the Skilled Worker route. Graduate visa holders qualify for the lower new entrant salary floor, but total time under those new entrant provisions is capped at four years, and time already spent in the UK counts toward it. Confirm the live rules on gov.uk.
Should I choose the 15 month or 21 month exit now? The visa clock starts when you apply after finishing, so a longer programme does not lose you visa time. It costs you living expenses and a later start. Choose the 21 month track for banking or a hard sector switch, and 15 months for consulting. Our LBS admissions guide has the full framework.
Is the LBS MBA worth the cost in 2026? The mean base of USD 123,373 and an 86% three month acceptance rate support the case, particularly for consulting. The case weakens if you are not targeting one of the three big sectors or if you plan to return to India. Run your own numbers with a profile evaluation before committing.
