Stern is finance on the brochure and tech on the LinkedIn tag, and Indian applicants keep applying to the wrong brand

NYU Stern MBA from India: Tech Versus Finance Outcomes for the Class of 2027

If you are a product manager in Bengaluru who has been told that NYU Stern is the "New York tech MBA", or a banker in Mumbai who assumes it is simply a cheaper Columbia, one of those beliefs is wrong. The nyu stern mba from india is a finance and consulting programme with a tech option attached, and the Class of 2025 employment numbers show it. This post is for Indian applicants deciding which version of Stern they are actually buying, and what a 2026 visa climate does to that decision.

What the Stern employment data actually says

Start with who got hired. In the Class of 2025 employment report as summarised by Clear Admit, 326 graduates left Stern and 271 sought work. Financial services took 36.6% of the hires, and investment banking alone was 28% of offers. Consulting took 32.8%. Technology and telecom took 14.2%.

That is two industries absorbing roughly seven in ten graduates, and finance alone is more than double tech. GMAC's review of the same data adds the trend line: tech was about 19 to 20% of the class in 2021, fell to 9.1% in 2024, and recovered to 14.2% in 2025. So tech is not a dying track at Stern, but it has been the volatile one.

Money tells the same story. Stern reports a Class of 2025 median base salary of $175,000 and average total compensation of $202,705. Financial services averaged $165,624 in base and consulting $173,368, while technology averaged $157,962. Per GMAC, median tech base pay ran between $143,500 and $152,500 over 2023 to 2025, against a school-wide median of $175,000 held flat for three years. A Stern tech graduate typically starts $22,500 to $31,500 below the median base. If you are borrowing to attend, that gap compounds.

Why the "tech MBA" label misleads Indian applicants

Stern does run a tech-focused MBA offering, and New York has a real technology sector. But the headline pipeline is banking and consulting. Consulting hiring is also uneven: the Big Three (McKinsey, BCG and Bain) took 49 Stern graduates in 2023, 21 in 2024 and 30 in 2025, per GMAC. Median consulting pay slipped from $188,000 in 2023 to $175,000 in 2025.

The other thing the brand hides is geography. Of the 2025 class, 96% of graduates stayed in North America and only about 3% went to Asia and the Middle East. Stern is a New York recruiting engine. If your plan is to use it as a bridge back to a Mumbai or Singapore role, you are using a tool built for a different job.

If you are an IT services engineer or product manager aiming at tech

Be honest with yourself about the base rate. The Class of 2027 profile shows only 8% of the class came from technology before Stern, and 336 students enrolled from 4,933 applications, a 24% admit rate. Tech is a minority track on both ends: who comes in, and who goes out.

If you come from a Bengaluru product company with a clear scope story, Stern can work, but you are competing for a 14.2% slice of outcomes and you will earn at the lower end of the school's pay range. If you are applying mainly for a tech career, compare Stern against programmes with a higher tech share before you spend an essay slot here. Our MBA abroad guide covers how to build that shortlist by outcome, not by brand.

If you are a banker or a CA targeting finance

This is where Stern is strongest. Finance was 31% of the Class of 2027's pre-MBA backgrounds and 36.6% of the Class of 2025's outcomes, so you will be among your own peers, and recruiters treat the school as a core New York source. If you are choosing between Stern and a bigger name for banking, our comparison of Columbia and Wharton for Indian investment bankers shows how to read these shares by school.

The honest caveat: banking recruitment at Stern is heavily school-facilitated. About 74% of Class of 2025 hires came through school channels. That is good news if you run the recruiting calendar hard in your first semester, and bad news if you assume the brand will carry you to a job offer on its own.

If you are a consultant or a generalist weighing the numbers

Stern's Class of 2027 averages 5.1 years of work experience, a 737 GMAT (682 on the Focus Edition) and a 3.64 GPA, and 15% came from consulting. An Indian consultant will find company. But 32.8% of the outcomes is a strong share, not a guaranteed MBB seat, and the Big Three count swung from 49 to 21 in a year. Treat Stern as a path to consulting broadly, not a path to one firm.

What the 2026 visa climate does to this decision

Nearly half of Stern, 48% of the Class of 2025, held international citizenship, and 43% of the Class of 2027 does. Those students need an employer willing to sponsor them, and that is the variable that moved most in the last year.

On October 7, 2026, DHS proposed a $70,000 fee on schools for each OPT recommendation, with $30,000 for extensions. It is a proposal, not a final rule. Separately, the $100,000 H-1B proclamation was extended to September 21, 2027, as we explained in our note on the H-1B fee extension. Our analysis of the OPT fee proposal walks through the scenarios.

The practical read: banks and consultancies have long histories of sponsoring MBAs, so finance and consulting are the safer lanes for an Indian student. A smaller tech employer, which the 14.2% tech cohort leans on, may balk at an extra five- or six-figure cost. That is a reason to weigh the visa risk by industry, not a reason to avoid Stern.

Common questions

Is NYU Stern good for tech careers?

It supports them, but it is not the strongest tech feeder. Tech took 14.2% of the Class of 2025, with median base pay of roughly $143,500 to $152,500, well below the $175,000 school median. It is a reasonable choice if your goal is financial technology or a New York-based tech role, and a weaker one if you want a classic West Coast tech pipeline.

Can an Indian student get a job after NYU Stern?

Yes, and many do, since 48% of the Class of 2025 was international. But 96% of graduates stayed in North America, so the realistic Stern outcome is a US job. That route depends on OPT and an H-1B or alternative visa, both under pressure in 2026.

What GMAT does NYU Stern expect?

The Class of 2027 averaged 737 on the GMAT 10th Edition (80% range 690 to 760) and 682 on the Focus Edition (645 to 725). GRE averages were 164 quantitative and 163 verbal.

Should I choose Stern over Columbia for finance?

It depends on your target. Stern places a large share of its class in finance, but Columbia generally sends a higher share into investment banking, so the choice depends on the bank and group you want, not the brand.

What this means for Indian applicants

Pick Stern for finance and consulting in New York, and treat tech as a secondary lane. Decide your target industry before you write essays, because your story has to match the data. If you are unsure which track your profile supports, a profile evaluation will test your numbers against these outcomes, and our application editing service helps once you know the path.
