If you are a 33-year-old manager with eleven years at an IT services firm and a two-page resume that your seniors have praised, the question keeping you up is probably whether ISB will punish you for cutting it down or for leaving it long. The short answer is that the choice has mostly been made for you. ISB supplies its own resume template, and every account we have seen describes it as one page. This post compares the one-page and two-page approaches for the ISB resume format and shows what to trim.
What ISB actually asks for
ISB does not leave the resume format open. Applicants on GMAT Club noted that the PGP application requires a resume upload in a format ISB indicates, supplied as a sample template. The detailed field layout sits inside that downloadable template, so we cannot quote it here, and you should always work from the version in your own application portal.
For the PGPpro programme, the GoalISB application guide is more explicit: the resume is limited to one page, must follow the prescribed ISB format, is accepted as PDF, JPEG or PNG, and has a 2 MB size cap. It also says the resume must leave out contact details, social media links, academic marks or CGPA, salary figures and test scores. Treat these as the PGPpro rules as reported by a third-party consultant, and confirm the PGP rules in your own portal before you finalise.
The practical reading is simple. If a template with fixed sections is handed to you, a two-page document is not a stylistic choice. It is a deviation.
One page versus two: how the two approaches compare
| Dimension | One page (ISB template) | Two pages (general MBA norm) |
|---|---|---|
| Who it suits | Everyone applying to ISB, from 2 to 15 years of experience | Applicants to schools that set no limit |
| What the reader sees | Four to six decisions per role | Full role history with every project |
| Main risk | Losing context on a long career | Looking like you ignored the template |
| Where it comes from | ISB's own format | Advice such as the GMAT Club rule of thumb of roughly one page per ten years of work |
The GMAT Club piece is honest in its own terms: it says admissions officers do not automatically reject longer resumes and that content matters more than length. But it also says a two-page resume works "unless the school specifies a one-page requirement". ISB specifies one. So the general guidance and ISB's template do not conflict; the template simply overrides the default.
If you are an IT services manager with ten or more years
You have a career built on many projects, and the instinct is to list all of them. The one-page limit forces a different editorial rule: keep the roles, cut the project inventory.
For each role, keep at most four bullets, and write each one as a result. A line such as "led a five-person team and lifted lead conversions 34% across three regions" is the shape GoalISB uses as its model bullet. Drop client names that mean nothing to an adcom, drop tool lists, and merge your first three years into a single line. Your first job at 22 matters less than your last two roles at 30 and 33.
If you are a consultant or banker with two to five years
Your problem is the opposite. The page looks thin, so people pad it with college activities and certifications. Resist this. Two strong roles with four bullets each, one line on education, and one line on extracurriculars will read better than a full page of small items. Our post on how the ISB adcom reads a resume covers the four points a reader looks at first.
If you are a founder or family business applicant
A one-page limit is awkward when your "role" is the company. Break it into phases: launch, scale, current. Give each a revenue, team size or customer number you can defend in an interview. Anything you list will be asked about.
What the adcom prefers, as far as we can tell
ISB has not published a rubric for resume scoring, and we will not pretend otherwise. What we do have is a statement from ISB's Head of Admissions at the time, in an admissions director blog post dated 2015, which asks applicants to highlight the key responsibilities and projects they have handled. That is guidance on content, not on length, and it is more than a decade old. Read it as a direction, not a rule.
What we can say from working with Indian ISB applicants over 13 years is this: a resume that follows the template and is easy to scan helps the rest of your application. A resume that breaks the template adds one more thing for the reader to wonder about.
What this means for Indian applicants
Start from the template in your portal, not from your existing corporate resume. Cut to one page by removing, in this order: project lists, tool names, college positions older than your first job, and any salary or score that the template excludes. Keep your numbers consistent with your essays and your recommender's letter. Our ISB PGP admissions guide explains how each part of the application is read together, and a profile evaluation can show where your resume is weakest before you submit.
Common questions
Can I upload a two-page resume if I have 12 years of experience? The reported ISB rule is one page in the prescribed format. A longer file risks looking like you did not follow instructions, and the template exists so that every applicant is read on equal terms. Check the exact wording in your portal.
Should I include my CGPA or GMAT score on the resume? The PGPpro rules, as reported by GoalISB, exclude marks, CGPA and test scores. Those details have their own fields in the application form, so the resume does not need to repeat them.
What file type should I use? For PGPpro, PDF, JPEG or PNG under 2 MB are reported as accepted. A PDF exported from the ISB template keeps formatting intact. Open the exported file once before uploading to confirm nothing shifted onto a second page.
Is a one-page resume bad for a long career? No. Selecting what matters is the skill the adcom is looking at. A page that shows five clear decisions is stronger than two pages of duties.
