If you are a woman with five years at a Bengaluru product company, or a CA in Pune, and a colleague has told you that ISB "wants women" and the essays are softer for you, you are about to waste an application cycle on a bad assumption. The share of women at ISB has risen sharply. The bar you are read against has not moved. This post lays out the numbers on ISB women applicants, then separates what the adcom does care about from what it does not.
The numbers: from 38 percent to the mid-forties
Start with the earliest figure we can verify from ISB itself. In a January 2022 post on the ISB Admissions Director's blog, the school noted that women made up "almost 38%" of PGP classroom strength, and added that the male to female ratio in an average PGP class was among the highest in top business schools globally. That was the starting line.
Three years later, Poets&Quants' profile of the Class of 2025 (819 students, average age 26) reported that the percentage of women "climbed 7%" from the previous year. The article does not state the exact Class of 2025 share, so we will not invent one. What it does confirm is the direction and the speed.
For the Class of 2026 (826 students across Hyderabad and Mohali), aggregators including Collvera and earlier BusinessBecause coverage put women at 47 percent. A caveat: ISB's own class profile page renders its figures as images, and I could not retrieve a text version to confirm the number directly. Poets&Quants' Class of 2026 piece does not give a percentage either, though it notes ISB scoring well on LinkedIn's gender diversity metric. Treat 47 percent as a credible secondary-source figure, and check the live ISB page before you quote it in an essay.
The younger programme tells a cleaner story. ISB's press release for the inaugural PGP YL 2025-2027 batch states that 50 percent of the 130 students are women. The 2026-28 YL intake of 132 students was reported at 48 percent women.
Read together: roughly 38 percent in 2022, the mid-forties for the flagship PGP by 2026, and parity at the early-career YL programme. For the full cohort picture beyond gender, see our ISB PGP class profile 2026 breakdown.
If you are an IT services or product engineer: the number does not rescue a generic file
Your sub-pool is crowded whatever your gender. Engineering remains the largest academic background in the PGP, and tech remains one of the biggest pre-MBA industries. A rising women's share tells you the class is being built to include more women. It does not tell you that a file with a 700 GMAT, four years of delivery work and a "I want to move into consulting" essay will be preferred over the identical male file.
The adcom is choosing 800-plus people from a very large pool, and its stated aim, per the 2022 ISB blog, is diversity "in every shade", not a gender quota that substitutes for quality. The practical read: gender may be a tiebreaker among equivalent files, but you cannot plan around being a tiebreaker. Plan to be the file that does not need one.
If you are a CA, lawyer or doctor: your scarcity is the asset, not your gender
Non-engineers are the other half of what ISB is assembling. If you are a chartered accountant from Pune or a doctor from Chennai, the thing that makes your file distinctive is the profession and what you did in it, which is rarer in the room than the fact that you are a woman. Lead with the decision you made at work that a bank analyst or a software lead would not have faced. Then connect it to a specific post-MBA move. Our guide for non-engineering applicants walks through that framing.
What the adcom does care about
Because the ISB blog and class-profile pages do not describe any separate evaluation track for women, the safe operating assumption is that you are read against the same criteria as every other applicant. Those criteria are the ones we see decide files year after year at Pegasus Global Consultants:
- Evidence of impact with numbers. Team size, revenue, cost saved, users moved. Indian women in male-skewed industries often under-describe their own leadership because it was exercised without the title. Write the title you functionally held.
- A post-MBA goal that ISB can serve. India-track consulting, product, finance or general management. If your goal needs a US credential, say so honestly or pick a different programme.
- A clean GMAT or GRE and a coherent academic record. Your score is read as a number, with no gender adjustment.
- Recommenders who can name specific behaviour. Not "hardworking and committed", but the night you rebuilt the model before the client call.
- Fit with a one-year, high-intensity programme. The adcom wants to know you can absorb the pace. Our ISB PGP admissions guide covers how that fit gets tested at the interview.
What the adcom does not care about
Three beliefs circulate in applicant WhatsApp groups. None has support in anything ISB has published.
That you should write about being a woman. The adcom does not reward a gender essay. It rewards a career story. If a male-dominated environment shaped a decision, include it as context in one sentence, then move to what you did.
That a lower GMAT is acceptable for women. ISB publishes no separate cut-off. A 2026 batch that is close to half women also has a competitive median score; the two facts coexist because the pool of strong women applicants has grown, not because the bar dropped.
That the application is shorter or easier. Essays, tests, recommendations and the interview are the same. If your plan is to take less time on it because of the ratio, you are the applicant the ratio does not help.
What this means for Indian women applicants
First, use the ratio as information about the room you are joining, not as a factor in your odds. A class that is 45 to 50 percent women is a class where you will not be one of a few, which matters for study groups, case teams and the network you carry into years three to ten after graduation.
Second, scholarships are worth a real look, since several are tied to merit and background. Our ISB scholarships guide lists what we can source, and the ISB Admissions Director's 2022 post specifically did not describe a dedicated women's scholarship, so confirm current terms on isb.edu before building a financing plan around one.
Third, decide between PGP and PGP YL honestly. The YL intake is younger (average age 23 for 2026-28) and measured on CAT percentile rather than work experience, so it suits a different applicant. If you have four or more years of experience, you are a PGP applicant. For the broader cohort story told from a woman's point of view, we also covered it in ISB MBA for women applicants from India.
If you want an honest read on where your file sits before the next cycle, our profile evaluation is the fastest route, and the MBA and MIM service page shows how we work with ISB applicants.
Common questions about ISB women applicants
What percentage of ISB students are women? The most recent flagship PGP figure reported by secondary sources is about 47 percent for the Class of 2026, up from roughly 38 percent in 2022 per ISB's own blog. The PGP YL batches are at 48 to 50 percent. Check isb.edu for the current official number.
Is it easier for women to get into ISB? There is no published evidence of a different bar. A rising share of women reflects a growing pool of strong applicants and ISB's stated diversity goals. Treat your odds as determined by your file.
Does ISB give women a GMAT relaxation? ISB has published no separate GMAT cut-off for women. Prepare to the same score range as every other applicant.
Should I mention gender in my ISB essays? Only as brief context if it shaped a real decision. The essays reward a specific career narrative, and our guide to the career goals essay shows how to write one.
