If you are a 29-year-old Big Four or IT-services consultant from Bengaluru with a 700-plus GMAT and your eye on a McKinsey, BCG or Bain offer in Europe, INSEAD vs HEC Paris probably does not feel like a real contest. INSEAD is the famous one, the one your seniors mention first. The fear underneath is simple: pick HEC and you may have bought the second-best ticket to the same room. The employment data says the room is not the same, and the gap is not where most Indian applicants assume it is.

INSEAD vs HEC Paris: the consulting numbers, stripped down
INSEAD sent 50% of its Class of 2025 into consulting, with a consulting median base of about $117,700 (Poets&Quants, January 2026). That headline is the number every INSEAD brochure leans on. Read one layer deeper and it splits in two: 23% of the class were new consulting hires, while 27% were returning to their pre-MBA employers (Clear Admit, January 2026). More than half of INSEAD's consulting figure is sponsored consultants going back to the firm that sent them.
HEC Paris tells a different story. Consulting was 15% of placements by sector for the Class of 2025, behind technology at 27% and finance at 24%, with a consulting median of about $108,964 (MiM-Essay summary of the HEC Paris 2025 employment report). HEC excludes sponsored students from its salary calculations, so its numbers are closer to an open-market picture.

Class sizes come from Poets&Quants for INSEAD and Clear Admit's HEC Paris profile for HEC. So the honest comparison for someone without a firm to return to is roughly 23% new consulting hires at INSEAD against 15% at HEC. That is a real gap. It is not the 50% versus 15% gap the brochures imply.
The MBB pipeline is shrinking at INSEAD too
Absolute numbers matter more than percentages for a school with 929 graduates. INSEAD's top recruiter list for 2025 shows McKinsey at 100 hires, BCG at 60 and Bain at 51, a combined 211. Two years earlier the same three firms hired 364 INSEAD graduates (Poets&Quants, January 2026). That is a 42% fall in MBB hiring at the school most associated with MBB.
HEC's MBB hiring is smaller in absolute terms because the class is less than a third the size and consulting is a smaller slice of it. McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Strategy& and Kearney all appear on its 2025 recruiter list, but a 15% consulting share of a class of roughly 268 means tens of consulting hires, not hundreds. If your plan is MBB or nothing, INSEAD still gives you more shots at the door. It just gives you fewer than it did in 2023, and the returners are already holding a chunk of those seats.
Ten months against sixteen: the cost math in rupees
INSEAD lists tuition of €109,860 for both the August 2026 and January 2027 intakes, and budgets another €30,000 to €33,000 for living costs, for a total near €140,000 to €143,000 (INSEAD financing page). At roughly ₹106 to the euro, that is about ₹1.48 to ₹1.52 crore over 10 months, or close to ₹15 lakh a month.
HEC's September 2026 tuition is reported at €102,000 for the 16-month track, with some sources listing €99,000, plus an HEC estimate of about €25,300 in living costs, for an all-in figure near €127,000 (MiM-Essay, HEC Paris MBA fees 2026-27). The sticker gap of about ₹15 lakh mostly disappears once you count salary. HEC's 16-month track keeps you out of work six months longer than INSEAD. For a consultant earning ₹30 lakh a year, that is about ₹15 lakh of forgone pay, which puts the two schools at nearly the same total economic cost. What differs is shape: INSEAD burns cash faster and returns you to a salary sooner; HEC spreads the burden and buys you a summer internship between phases.
The visa layer: France, London and the US
Both campuses sit in France, and Indian master's graduates get an unusually good deal there. Under the 2018 India-France Migration and Mobility Partnership, Indian graduates can hold the RECE post-study permit for 12 months, renewable once for another 12, a total of up to 24 months (Leap Scholar, citing Campus France India). Eligibility depends on the diploma, so ask each school's careers office to confirm in writing that your specific MBA qualifies. For INSEAD students who spend most of the year in Singapore, the France route may matter less than Singapore's own work pass rules.
London is a sponsorship question for both. The UK Graduate Route, which shortens to 18 months from January 2027, applies to UK degrees only, so neither school's graduates can use it; London MBB offices hire on Skilled Worker sponsorship regardless. The US is harder still after the $100,000 fee on new H-1B petitions introduced in September 2025, and only 6% of INSEAD's 2025 class took North American roles.
Where the money is earned matters. HEC's France-based graduates reported a median of about $84,404, against about $104,195 elsewhere in Europe and $82,825 in Asia (MiM-Essay summary of the HEC Paris 2025 report). A Paris consulting offer is not a London consulting offer, even from the same firm.
If you are a sponsored or return-eligible consultant from an Indian firm
INSEAD is built for you. The 27% returner share shows how comfortable consulting firms are sending people through the 10-month programme and taking them back. If your current employer (an MBB India office, Accenture Strategy, a Big Four strategy arm) will sponsor you or hold your role, INSEAD's speed means the least time off the ladder, and your job search risk is close to zero. Paying ₹15 lakh a month for ten months is easier to justify when the exit is already signed.
If you are an engineer or product person pivoting into consulting with no firm behind you
This is where the decision gets honest. At INSEAD you compete in a 10-month sprint where case interviews start almost immediately, against classmates who have already done consulting work. At HEC the 16-month track gives you a fundamentals phase, an internship and a second recruiting window. The trade-off is that HEC's consulting share is lower, and many pivoters there land in tech or corporate strategy instead, which the 27% technology share reflects. If MBB is non-negotiable and your case skills are already sharp, take INSEAD. If you would accept a strategy role at a tech or luxury group as a good outcome, HEC's pace and lower monthly burn fit you better. If you plan to come back to India or Singapore within five years
INSEAD placed 23% of its 2025 class in Asia-Pacific, and its Singapore campus gives you in-region recruiting. HEC's graduates stay mainly in Europe. For an Indian applicant whose long-term plan is Mumbai, Gurugram or Singapore, INSEAD's network is the more direct asset.

Stop comparing 50% with 15%. Compare 23% new consulting hires with 15%, then compare 10 months at ₹15 lakh a month with 16 months at ₹8.4 lakh a month plus six months of lost salary. On that basis INSEAD keeps a real edge for MBB-first applicants, especially those with a sponsor or a return option, and HEC becomes the stronger choice for pivoters who want Paris, a slower build and a wider set of acceptable exits.
