If you are three tabs deep into a HEC IESE IE comparison, with a spreadsheet that has one column called "rank" and another called "fees", and you still cannot choose, the problem is the spreadsheet. My position is simple: for an Indian applicant, these three schools should be chosen by the job market you want to work in after graduation, not by which one sits highest in the Financial Times list. Rank order is nearly irrelevant here. Geography, sector mix and post-study work rules decide the outcome. This post shows why.
The numbers that actually differ
Start with the facts, because they are more different than the "top European MBAs" label suggests.
IESE's full-time MBA runs 15 or 19 months. Its class profile page lists 370+ students, 89% international, an average of 5.4 years of work experience, an average age of 29, and a GMAT Focus range of 545 to 715. Reported tuition for the 2026 intake is about €114,000, per MiM-Essay's IESE summary. That is the highest sticker price of the three.
HEC Paris runs 12 or 16 months. The school reports a Class of 2025 that is 95% international from 49 nationalities. Tuition for the January and September 2027 intakes is about €102,000, with roughly €25,300 more for 16 months of living costs, according to MiM-Essay's HEC fee breakdown. If you want the full rupee walk-through, see our post on HEC Paris MBA fees for Indians in 2026.
IE runs 11 or 15 months, with September and January intakes. Reported tuition is about €89,900, and IE does not publish a class size in its latest career report. It is the cheapest of the three by roughly €12,000 to €24,000 in tuition alone.
Treat the fee figures as third-party reported and confirm them on each school's admissions page before you budget. The point stands either way: the gap between the cheapest and dearest option is about a quarter of a crore rupees before living costs.
Where the graduates actually go
This is the section most comparison posts skip, and it is the one that should decide your shortlist.
IESE's Class of 2025 placed 41% of employed graduates in consulting, 33% in diversified industries, 16% in finance and 9% in technology, with 80% employed within three months. Geographically, 27% went to Latin America, 21% to Spain, 20% to the rest of Europe, 15% to Asia-Pacific and 11% to the Middle East, per IESE's career impact report. Top recruiters include McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Accenture, Google and Amazon. IESE is a consulting school with a big Latin American and Iberian tilt.
HEC's Class of 2025 saw 75% accept offers within three months, and 64% secured positions outside their home country. Geographically, 52% went to Europe, 25% to Asia and Oceania, and 11% to North America, per HEC's employment statistics. Third-party summaries put the class at 27% technology, 24% finance and 15% consulting, with an average package near $123,170. HEC leans towards tech and finance, and its 25% Asia and Oceania share compares with 15% for IESE's Asia-Pacific.
IE is harder to read. Third-party reporting gives technology 21%, finance 18%, industrial 18% and consulting 17%. The much-quoted "$176,305" weighted salary comes from the Financial Times ranking and reflects alumni about three years out, so do not compare it with HEC's fresh-graduate figure. Putting a three-year-out number next to a day-one number is the most common mistake in these comparisons.
Two of these schools publish their sector splits on their own pages. Where a figure above is third-party, that is why it is flagged.
If you are an IT services engineer chasing a consulting exit
IESE is the strongest fit of the three on published data. A 41% consulting share, a 5.4-year average work-experience profile and recruiter names like McKinsey, BCG and Bain on the list make it a real consulting pipeline. The catch is that the class is 89% international, and many consulting offers are for Spanish, Latin American or Middle Eastern offices. If you cannot work in Spanish or do not want those geographies, the pipeline narrows. Do not assume that an offer in Madrid means a seat in London.
If you are a finance or tech professional wanting a Europe base
HEC is the more natural fit. Its published geography is 52% Europe, and its employer mix leans towards technology and finance. The 12-month option also suits an applicant who wants to limit the opportunity cost of a career break. France also ended annual student visa renewals for Indian nationals in 2026, which removes one recurring paperwork burden. We covered that in France's multi-year student visa for Indians.
If you are a founder, a family business heir or a sponsored candidate
IE is where this profile tends to find the most room. It is the cheapest of the three, it runs an 11-month track, and its sector spread is the least dominated by consulting. That suits an entrepreneur who needs the network and a shorter absence, more than a candidate who needs a McKinsey offer. If you are one of the applicants who needs a job in Spain to repay a loan, read the Spain section below before you commit.
The policy layer nobody puts in the rankings table
Spain and France both offer post-study routes, but neither hands you a work permit for free. Graduates can apply for a post-study residence authorisation of up to 24 months to search for employment in Spain, but that authorisation does not itself permit work until you convert it after landing an offer. Check the French equivalent on Campus France before you rely on it.
The reason so many Indian applicants now look at Europe at all is the United States. Since the September 2025 proclamation, new H-1B petitions carry a $100,000 payment, as USCIS describes. Europe is a hedge against that, not a guaranteed substitute. None of these three schools will land you a US job on its own. Choose one of them for what it does well: European and Asian placement.

When the rank order does matter
I would be overstating my own case if I said rank never matters. The Financial Times 2026 list has HEC at sixth globally and IESE fourth, as MiM-Essay's summaries report, and IE at 21st. That gap is real when the employer is a firm that filters by brand, and it is smaller than most applicants think for the roles that recruit on skills. A four-place difference is not worth a €25,000 fee premium or a wrong-geography job search. A jump from 6th to 21st is a fairer thing to weigh, but only after you have checked where the graduates work.
Common questions
Which is easier for an Indian applicant to get into, HEC, IESE or IE?
IE does not publish an average GMAT, and IESE publishes a Focus range of 545 to 715. HEC publishes an average GMAT Focus of about 635 in third-party summaries and an acceptance rate near 18%. None of the three publishes an India-specific acceptance rate. Read our school guides for HEC Paris, IESE and IE Madrid for profile detail.
Is IESE worth €114,000 for a consulting career?
Only if the 41% consulting share matches your target and you can work in the regions its graduates go to. If you want London or Singapore consulting specifically, compare it with a school that places there. Run your own arithmetic against our full cost of an MBA abroad breakdown.
Can I work in Europe after a one-year MBA?
You can search for work, and offers convert to work authorisations, but neither Spain nor France guarantees a job. Employment within three months was 80% at IESE and 75% at HEC for the Class of 2025, which means one in four or five graduates was still searching at the three-month mark.
Should I choose the 11-month or 12-month programme to save money?
Shorter programmes cost less in living expenses and lost salary, but they compress the internship window that many career switchers rely on. If you are changing sector, the longer track is usually the safer route.
What this means for Indian applicants
Write down three things before you touch the ranking table: the city you want to work in, the sector you want to enter, and the loan you can carry. If the first is Barcelona or Madrid and the second is consulting, IESE. If it is Paris or a Europe-wide tech or finance role, HEC. If it is a shorter, cheaper year with room for entrepreneurship, IE. If none of those fit, none of these three is your school.
A profile check will tell you which of these is realistic before you spend on the GMAT. Start with our profile evaluation, and read the MBA and MIM overview. When your shortlist is set, our application editing service covers essays and CV, and the MBA abroad hub links the rest of this series.
