Haas sends 38.6% of its class to tech, but the H-1B lottery decides who stays

Berkeley Haas MBA from India: The Tech Brand and the Visa Realities of 2027

If you are an engineer at a services company in Bengaluru, you have probably typed "Berkeley Haas MBA from India" into a search bar at midnight, half hoping the answer is a clean yes. The honest answer is that Haas is one of the strongest routes into Bay Area tech for an MBA, and that the thing standing between you and that outcome is not the admit. It is the US work visa that follows it. This post separates the two.

What Haas actually delivers: the Class of 2025 numbers

Start with the brand claim, because it holds up. According to Poets&Quants, technology took 38.6% of Haas full-time MBA placements in 2025, up from 24.3% in 2024, and returned to first place. Consulting held 26.8% and financial services 15.7%. The Haas newsroom reports a record average base salary of $164,930, with a $190,000 median base in consulting and $159,000 in technology.

Clear Admit's employment report summary fills in the denominator. There were 229 graduates and 182 sought employment. The median base was $167,250, 85.7% had an offer within three months, 84.1% had accepted, and 81.7% of the class stayed in the US West. Adobe, Amazon, Deloitte, McKinsey and Nvidia led the employer list.

Two cautions. First, one year of tech rebound is not a trend: a 14-point swing in a single class means the 2024 slump was real and the 2025 recovery could reverse. Second, none of these reports separates international students from the class average, so you cannot read your own odds off these figures. Nobody should tell you that they apply to you.

Who gets in: the Class of 2027 profile

The Class of 2027 has 273 students, down from 295 the year before, per Poets&Quants. International students make up roughly 42% to 44% depending on the outlet, from 42 countries. Clear Admit lists a median GMAT of 730 (middle 80% from 669 to 767), a median GMAT Focus of 675, and average work experience of 5.6 years.

That international share is encouraging, but it is not an Indian share. Neither source breaks out India. An Indian IT engineer is competing in the largest and most similar applicant pool in the world, so a 730 with a standard resume is the floor of the conversation, not the edge.

If you are an IT services engineer targeting Haas for tech

This is the most common profile in our inbox and the one where Haas needs the most honesty. Haas recruiters in tech want product, strategy, corporate development and operations hires, and the 38.6% figure is a set of those roles, not generic software roles. A services background with no product exposure needs a bridge before you apply: a product-owner project, an internal tools launch, a client-facing analytics build you can quantify.

The brand helps with the recruiter's first screen. It does not substitute for the story. If your plan is "MBA, then product manager at a large Bay Area company", you need to show on the application why that move is credible from where you stand.

If you are a product manager or startup operator already

You are the closest fit to what Haas sells. The school's reputation for entrepreneurial and tech-leaning cohorts matches your goals, and your pre-MBA experience maps directly to the roles that fill the tech share. Your risk is the opposite: an essay that reads as a repeat of your resume. Admissions at this level wants the reason for the MBA, not the proof that you are good at your job. Read our Michigan Ross breakdown for the same exercise at a peer school.

The visa layer: what has actually changed

Here is where the Haas pitch gets complicated for an Indian graduate. Three pieces of US policy now sit between a Haas degree and a Bay Area offer.

The first is the September 2025 proclamation setting a $100,000 fee on new H-1B petitions. GMAC's summary of USCIS guidance says the fee does not apply to F-1 students changing status inside the US. That exemption matters: a Haas graduate on OPT whose employer files a change of status is covered. A graduate who leaves the US and is hired from abroad is not.

The second is the weighted selection rule. DHS's final rule, published on 29 December 2025 and described by HSF Kramer, enters each registration once to four times in the lottery depending on the wage level of the offer: Level IV gets four entries, Level III three, Level II two, Level I one. Haas tech base salaries, at a $159,000 median, are well placed for the higher levels in many roles. The level is set by the occupation code and county, so check your specific offer rather than assuming. We covered the wage-floor side in our DOL prevailing wage analysis.

The third is OPT. Proposals to cap or fee the work authorization attached to your degree remain live; our August 2026 DHS H-1B and OPT fee rule post tracks the current state. Plan for a worse OPT environment than the one your seniors had.

What this means for Indian applicants

The practical consequence is that Haas is a better bet for the Indian who will land a high-wage offer in a few high-paying functions than for the one who wants broad optionality. The weighted lottery rewards pay level. A $190,000 consulting offer and a $159,000 tech offer both look strong. A $110,000 operations role does not.

Run the ROI with two scenarios, not one. Scenario A is the Class of 2025 median and an H-1B selection within your OPT window. Scenario B is a non-selection, with a return to India or a move to Canada, London or Singapore using the Haas network. If Scenario B still beats your current career path on cost-adjusted terms, Haas is rational. If it only works when the visa works, you are making a lottery bet with a seven-figure rupee ticket. That is not a reason to avoid Haas; it is a reason to price it correctly. Our MBA abroad guidance walks through the full cost model, and the profile evaluation is the fastest way to test whether your pre-MBA story fits the roles above.

Questions applicants are asking

Is Berkeley Haas worth it for Indian students? For product, strategy and consulting goals in the US West, the Class of 2025 outcomes are strong: a $167,250 median base and 85.7% with offers inside three months. Worth depends on whether you can absorb the case where the work visa does not come through.

What GMAT do I need for Haas? The Class of 2027 median is 730 on the older GMAT scale and 675 on GMAT Focus, with an 80% range of 669 to 767 and 627 to 725 respectively. Indian applicants with scores below median can still be admitted, but the rest of the file has to carry more weight.

Does the $100,000 H-1B fee apply to Haas graduates? Not if you are changing status from F-1 inside the US, according to the USCIS guidance summarised by GMAC. It applies to new petitions for people outside the country. Confirm the current rule before you accept an offer, since policy here moves quickly.
