If you are a 29-year-old IT services engineer in Pune who has restarted GMAT prep three times this year and still cannot crack a 700 mock, here is a number worth sitting with before you book another test slot. Of the 61 online MBA programs ranked by Poets and Quants for 2026, only 17 still require a GMAT or GRE score, roughly 28 percent. In 2020 that figure was about 86 percent. The requirement did not soften. It collapsed
The 2026 online MBA ranking data shows 43 of 61 ranked programs are now test-optional, meaning you can apply with no score at all and not be penalised for it. This is not a pandemic-era pause that quietly reverted. It is a five-year structural move, and the online segment has run ahead of the rest of the market.
The full-time, on-campus market tells a slower version of the same story. According to College Transitions, the list of accredited programs accepting test waivers has grown sharply since 2020, with online and part-time formats leading. BestColleges reports that among the U.S. News top 30 online MBAs in 2026, 19 do not require test scores, and three of those exclude standardized tests from the admissions decision entirely.
Test-optional is not the same as test-blind
This is the distinction most applicants get wrong, and it costs them. Test-optional means the school will read your file without a score, but will still read a strong score as a positive signal if you send one. Test-blind, which only a handful of programs are, means the number is not considered at all even if you submit it.
For the vast majority of test-optional programs, a 730 in your file still helps. So the real question is not "do I need the GMAT" but "does my profile need the GMAT to be believed". A waiver request typically leans on the same evidence a good score would have supplied: strong quantitative undergraduate grades, a CA or CFA credential, a quantitative graduate degree, or a role that visibly runs on analytical work. If you are targeting a strong online or executive-format program and you carry a quantitative credential, a waiver is often realistic, and the hours you would have spent on quant drills are better spent on essays and recommender management. The trade is real: a waiver removes a signal, so the rest of your file has to carry more weight.
