ISB and IIM Ahmedabad place into the same companies for India track, and the EMI math splits Indian applicants right down the middle

ISB vs IIM Ahmedabad 2026: Which One Wins for Your Career Goal

If you have four years of IT experience, a 720 GMAT, and an offer from both ISB and IIM Ahmedabad, the decision feels obvious until you run the numbers. ISB vs IIM Ahmedabad is the comparison Indian applicants make more than any other, and the answer depends entirely on where you are in your career, not on which school has a higher ranking. This framework lays out the decision in five variables so you can score your own fit.

The format question comes first for ISB vs IIM Ahmedabad

ISB runs a one-year PGP. IIM Ahmedabad runs a two-year PGP. That single difference cascades into everything else: opportunity cost, internship access, peer-group depth, and career-switch runway. If you are a working professional with five or more years of experience, losing two years of salary is a different calculation than losing one. ISB's median work experience is around four to five years. IIM Ahmedabad's PGP admits students with zero to three years of experience as the median, though the range extends wider.

For the Indian applicant with two years of experience and a strong CAT score, IIM Ahmedabad's two-year format provides a summer internship, which is the single most reliable conversion pipeline into consulting and banking roles. ISB does not offer a summer internship. The entire placement process at ISB is a lateral-hire cycle compressed into the final term.

This is the first filter. If you need internship-to-PPO conversion, IIM Ahmedabad wins structurally. If you want to return to the workforce twelve months faster, ISB wins on format. Read our full ISB PGP admissions guide to understand the one-year structure in detail.

The fee math is closer than Indian applicants expect

ISB's PGP fees for the 2026-27 batch stand at Rs 38.67 lakh for shared accommodation, according to ISB's official fee page. IIM Ahmedabad's two-year PGP costs approximately Rs 27.50 lakh for the full programme.

On absolute numbers, IIM Ahmedabad is Rs 11 lakh cheaper. But the comparison is incomplete without opportunity cost. An applicant earning Rs 18 lakh per annum loses Rs 36 lakh in salary over IIM Ahmedabad's two years versus Rs 18 lakh over ISB's one year. Add tuition and the total cost becomes roughly Rs 63.50 lakh for IIM Ahmedabad and Rs 56.67 lakh for ISB, assuming the same pre-MBA salary.

The breakeven tilts further toward ISB for applicants earning Rs 24 lakh or more before the MBA. For applicants earning below Rs 12 lakh, IIM Ahmedabad's lower tuition and longer runway to build skills narrows the gap. We covered the full ISB fee breakdown in this post.

If you are an IT services engineer with four to six years targeting consulting

This is the most common ISB vs IIM Ahmedabad profile in Indian admissions, and the one where the decision is sharpest. BCG made 33 offers at IIM Ahmedabad's 2026 placements, McKinsey made 21, and Bain made 20, according to Careers360. At ISB, Accenture Strategy led with over 100 offers, followed by Mastercard and EY GDS with 40-plus each, per the IMS placement comparison.

The MBB density at IIM Ahmedabad is structurally higher. With a batch of around 400 versus ISB's 808, the per-capita consulting placement rate at IIM A is roughly double. If your goal is McKinsey or Bain specifically, IIM Ahmedabad's two-year format with a summer internship is the stronger pipeline.

ISB's consulting placements are broader. Accenture Strategy, Kearney, EY-Parthenon, and the Big Four advisory arms recruit heavily from ISB. If you define consulting as the full strategy-and-advisory spectrum rather than just MBB, ISB places a larger absolute number of graduates into the sector.

If you are a finance professional or CA targeting banking

IIM Ahmedabad has historically placed more graduates into investment banking and private equity roles in Mumbai. The two-year format allows a summer analyst stint, which is the standard conversion path for bulge-bracket banks in India. ISB's finance placements lean toward corporate finance, fintech, and BFSI generalist roles.

For the Indian CA or CFA charterholder aiming at JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, or Kotak IB specifically, IIM Ahmedabad provides a more direct path. For the finance professional who wants a broader pivot into strategy, product, or general management, ISB's one-year format minimizes time away from the market.

The placement numbers side by side

ISB's average CTC for the Class of 2026 was Rs 37.29 lakh per annum, an 11 percent increase from Rs 34 lakh in 2025. The highest offer reached Rs 1.56 crore. IIM Ahmedabad's PGP 2025 placements reported an average of Rs 35.22 lakh, with the 2026 highest domestic offer hitting Rs 2.2 crore. The medians are close: ISB at around Rs 32 lakh and IIM Ahmedabad at Rs 34.53 lakh.

The averages are near-identical for India-track careers. The top-end outliers favour IIM Ahmedabad, driven by a handful of PE and IB offers. The median tells a more honest story: both schools land their typical graduate in the Rs 32 to 35 lakh range. We wrote a detailed breakdown of ISB's numbers in this salary analysis.

The five-variable decision framework

Score yourself on each variable. Whichever school wins three or more is your fit.

Variable 1: Work experience. If you have zero to three years, IIM Ahmedabad. If you have four or more, ISB. The peer group and recruiter expectations align with these bands.

Variable 2: Internship dependency. If your target role requires a summer internship for conversion (MBB, IB, select PE), IIM Ahmedabad. If you are targeting lateral-hire roles (product, strategy, general management, tech), ISB.

Variable 3: Opportunity cost. If your pre-MBA CTC is above Rs 20 lakh, the one-year format at ISB saves you Rs 20 lakh or more in lost salary. If your pre-MBA CTC is below Rs 12 lakh, the saving shrinks and IIM Ahmedabad's lower tuition becomes more relevant.

Variable 4: Entrance test. If you have a strong CAT percentile (99+), IIM Ahmedabad is the natural choice since that score does not transfer to ISB. If you have a GMAT 700+ and no CAT score, ISB is the direct path. Both schools accept GMAT, but IIM Ahmedabad's PGP still draws the majority of its class through CAT.

Variable 5: Network geography. ISB's alumni network is strongest in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Mumbai tech corridors. IIM Ahmedabad's network runs deepest in Mumbai finance, Delhi consulting, and Ahmedabad entrepreneurship. Match the network to the city you want to work in post-MBA.

What this means for Indian applicants

The ISB vs IIM Ahmedabad decision is not about which school is "better." Both place into McKinsey, BCG, Amazon, and Goldman Sachs. Both produce graduates earning Rs 32 to 37 lakh in their first year. The question is whether you fit the one-year lateral model or the two-year internship-conversion model.

If you are unsure which model fits your profile, a free profile evaluation can map your work experience, test scores, and career goals against both schools. We have guided applicants through this exact decision across thirteen admissions cycles, and the answer is almost always clear once the five variables are scored.

Common questions applicants are asking

Is ISB equivalent to IIM Ahmedabad in recruiter perception? For India-track careers in consulting, tech, and general management, yes. Both schools appear on the same shortlists. For Mumbai investment banking specifically, IIM Ahmedabad has a slight edge due to its two-year internship pipeline and deeper alumni density in Dalal Street firms.

Can I apply to both ISB and IIM Ahmedabad simultaneously? Yes. ISB accepts GMAT, GRE, and CAT scores. IIM Ahmedabad's PGP primarily uses CAT. If you have both a CAT 99+ and a GMAT 720+, applying to both is strategically sound. The application timelines are different: IIM Ahmedabad follows the CAT cycle (November exam, results in March), while ISB runs three rounds between September and March.

Which school has better ROI for a mid-career professional? ISB. The one-year format means one year of lost salary instead of two. For professionals earning Rs 20 lakh or more, this difference alone can be worth Rs 20 to 25 lakh in preserved income. IIM Ahmedabad's PGPX is the closer comparison for mid-career professionals, but it carries a Rs 35 lakh fee and a smaller batch with different recruiter dynamics.

Does IIM Ahmedabad's brand carry more weight than ISB's internationally? For roles outside India, neither school has strong pull compared to M7 or European top programmes. Within India, brand perception is sector-dependent. IIM Ahmedabad carries more weight in traditional industries (manufacturing, FMCG, banking). ISB carries more weight in tech, startups, and new-economy firms.
