If you have nine years of work experience and you are weighing ISB PGP vs IIMA PGPX, the fear is usually specific: you are worried you have left it too late for ISB, and worried that PGPX is a smaller brand in recruiter circles you care about. Both fears are partly wrong. At nine years, the deciding question is not which school is better. It is where you will sit inside each cohort, because that position decides the level of role recruiters will put in front of you.
This post is for the senior Indian applicant: a nine-year IT services delivery manager, a CA who has run a finance function, a defence officer approaching a second career. It answers the four questions we hear most often from this profile.
Where does a nine-year applicant sit in each class?
ISB's PGP Class of 2027 has 839 students across Hyderabad and Mohali, with an average age of 26 and work experience ranging from two to 18 years, according to Telangana Today's report on the incoming class. With an average age of 26, the bulk of the class carries roughly three to five years of experience. At nine years, you are in the thin upper tail. You will be one of a small number of people in your section who has managed a P&L or a team of 30.
IIMA's PGPX 2026-27 batch is a different room. The 160 students average 7 years and 6 months of experience and an age of 30 years and 8 months, per IIMA's own press release. The distribution matters more than the average. InsideIIM's breakdown of the batch shows 64 students with four to six years, 48 with six to eight, 18 with eight to ten, 19 with ten to twelve, and 11 above twelve. At nine years you sit around the 70th to 80th percentile of the PGPX class. You are senior, but not an outlier. Roughly 48 classmates, 30 percent of the batch, have eight years or more.
Do the placement numbers favour one programme for this profile?
On paper the averages look close. ISB's Class of 2026 received 1,117 offers with an average salary of 37.29 lakh and a highest offer of 1.56 crore, per ISB's graduation press release. For PGPX 2026, the IPRS-audited report showed a median fixed annual cash of about 32.59 lakh, a median maximum earning potential of about 38 lakh, and a 96.4 percent placement rate among the 139 students who sought placement, as summarised by Cracku.
The real signal sits in two details that averages hide.
First, ISB states that its Class of 2026 average CTC was 156 percent higher than the cohort's average pre-ISB CTC. Work that backwards and the average incoming salary was roughly 14.6 lakh. ISB's recruiting engine is calibrated for that starting point. If you already earn 28 to 35 lakh at nine years, the ISB average is close to where you are today, and many campus roles will be pitched at a level you have already passed.
Second, the PGPX report lists roles such as Vice President, Associate Director, Product Head and Senior Manager, with over 200 recruiters and around 65 first-time recruiters. Those are roles written for someone with your years. The same report also notes that 17 of 156 eligible students opted out of placements, and eight were sponsored or already employed. A meaningful share of senior candidates use PGPX as a credential, not a job-search reset.
Our read, based on 13 years of placing Indian applicants: at nine years, ISB's placement process can work for you, but only if you are pivoting into a function where your prior seniority does not transfer, such as a delivery manager moving into consulting. If you want to move up in your current track, PGPX recruiters are hiring at your level.
If you are a nine-year IT services manager
ISB reports that 67 percent of its 2026 graduates moved into a new industry and 69 percent into a new function. That is ISB's genuine strength: it is a switching machine. If your goal is to leave IT services for strategy consulting or product management, ISB's volume of recruiters (Accenture alone made over 100 offers) gives you more shots on goal. The trade-off is that you may re-enter at manager level, sitting alongside 27-year-olds.
At PGPX, IT consulting (32 offers) and consulting (24 offers) were the largest recruiting sectors in 2026. Your IT delivery background is read as seniority, not a lateral starting point. If you want to stay close to technology but step into a director-track or programme-head role, PGPX is the more natural fit.
If you are a CA, a defence officer, or a family business professional
For a nine-year CA who has led a finance team, PGPX's classroom is closer to your peer group, and its 2026 roles include general management and strategy positions that value functional depth. ISB will still admit you, but ask yourself whether you want to be the most experienced person in every study group for twelve months.
For defence officers, both schools actively admit service personnel; ISB named the Armed Forces in its Class of 2027 announcement, and IIMA counted 10 defence and security professionals in the PGPX batch. PGPX's older cohort tends to make the transition feel less isolating.

What about ISB's own senior-professional options?
This is the option nine-year applicants forget. ISB's PGPMAX is a 15-month modular programme that requires at least ten years of full-time experience, with no GMAT or GRE requirement, and a fee of roughly 42 lakh plus GST according to GOALisB's PGPMAX overview. At nine years, you are one cycle away from eligibility. If you want the ISB network, do not want to leave your job, and do not need a campus placement, waiting a year for PGPMAX can be a better call than forcing a full-time PGP application.
On fees for the full-time options, PGPX costs 35 lakh with single accommodation or 37.10 lakh for married housing, plus the international immersion, per MBAUniverse. What this means for Indian applicants
At nine years, run this test before you write a single essay. Write down the job title you want 18 months after graduation. Then ask which classroom already contains people one step below that title. For most senior candidates staying in their track, that is PGPX. For senior candidates making a hard switch, ISB's scale and switching record can justify being the oldest person in the room.
