If you are a 28-year-old IT services engineer in Bengaluru who has just paid the first ISB instalment, the question keeping you awake is not placements. It is whether you can survive a year in which everything happens at once. ISB life on the Hyderabad campus is a one-year residential programme compressed into roughly eight terms, and almost every applicant underestimates what that compression does to a normal week.
What ISB life actually looks like across the calendar
ISB runs the Post Graduate Programme in Management as a twelve-month, full-time, residential programme across the Hyderabad and Mohali campuses, requiring 24 or more months of work experience at entry. Roughly 820 students are admitted across both campuses each year, and the Class of 2025 enrolled 816.
The academic load is published plainly in the PGP curriculum. You carry 14 credits of core work, made up of 10 mandatory core courses and 4 flexi-core options, then 18 credits of electives including 4 credits earned inside block weeks, plus 1 mandatory credit for the Experiential Learning Programme. Electives begin only in Term 4. Before that, the timetable is not yours.
Two structural facts matter more than any brochure line. First, terms are short, which means a mid-term arrives roughly three weeks after a course starts and a final arrives three weeks after that. Second, the programme builds in four block weeks in which you study one course at a time, full days, including study treks and simulations. The result is a calendar with almost no slack. ISB publishes the term dates in its programme calendar, and the useful exercise before you accept an offer is to print it and mark your own non-negotiables against it.

You are likely arriving from a job with predictable hours, a clear ticket queue, and evenings that belong to you. The first six weeks at ISB remove all three. Financial Accounting, Managerial Economics, Statistical Methods and Leading Self and Teams run in Term 1 simultaneously, and each carries pre-reads, cases and graded group submissions.
The adjustment that hurts is not the difficulty of the content. It is the loss of solo control. Most deliverables are group deliverables, and your study group is assigned rather than chosen, usually to maximise diversity of industry and function. You will be the person explaining unit economics to a doctor at midnight and being taught accrual accounting by a chartered accountant at 6 a.m. Engineers who arrive expecting to out-work everyone alone tend to have a bruising Term 1 and a much better Term 3.
The practical preparation is unglamorous. Learn spreadsheet modelling and basic accounting before you land. Every hour you spend on that in the month before joining is an hour you get back during placement preparation.
If you are a CA, a consultant, or someone used to billable hours
You already know how to work long days, so the academic load is survivable. What catches this group is the social and recruiting load stacked on top of it. The Graduate Student Board runs clubs, events and student affairs, and professional clubs are where most consulting and finance preparation actually happens: case practice groups, guesstimate drills, mock interviews, alumni sessions.
Club leadership positions and competition wins are contested, and they are contested early, often in the first two terms, well before you have settled into a rhythm. Applicants who treat clubs as optional extracurriculars discover in Term 3 that the people getting consulting interview traction have been case-practising in structured groups since week four.
Then there is the Experiential Learning Programme, which is mandatory. Teams work as external consultants on a live business problem for a partner organisation, supported by both an ISB faculty mentor and an industry mentor, with a project charter, a mid-term review and a final presentation to the client's leadership. It is genuinely good preparation for consulting interviews. It also lands, for many cohorts, in the same window as placement preparation.
What the campus gives back
The counterweight to the compression is that the campus removes friction. ISB's life on campus pages show what the Hyderabad site at Gachibowli contains: student residences, the Learning Resource Centre, dining, a gym, indoor and outdoor sports facilities, an amphitheatre, a day care centre and faculty housing, all inside one campus. You are not commuting. You are not cooking. You are not negotiating with a landlord.
That matters more than it sounds. In a twelve-month programme, the two hours a day that an urban Indian professional normally loses to traffic and logistics are returned to you. Most students spend them on group rooms and the LRC, and a smaller number spend them on the sports facilities, which is usually the difference between finishing the year healthy and finishing it depleted.
The academic environment is similarly dense. ISB lists 70 or more resident faculty and 200 or more visiting faculty, and more than 57 partner institutions for international exchange. Three decisions follow from understanding the calendar honestly.
Decide what you are optimising for before Term 1, not during it. In twelve months, you cannot simultaneously top the grade curve, lead two clubs, run a strong ELP and switch sectors. Pick two. Bring your family into the decision explicitly. The residential format is total. If you have a spouse, a young child or a dependent parent, the campus does have family accommodation and a day care centre, but the honest version is that the year will be absorbing in a way a two-year programme abroad is not.

Is ISB life really as intense as people say?
Yes, in the specific sense that the workload is continuous rather than peaked. Short terms mean assessment never fully stops, and the mandatory ELP and block weeks occupy time that would be free in a two-year programme. Most students describe Terms 1 to 3 as the hardest, after which electives allow some control over the load. The intensity is a design choice, not an accident: ISB is compressing a two-year core into twelve months for a cohort that already has work experience.
What does a typical day at ISB Hyderabad look like?
Classes commonly begin in the morning and run in blocks of roughly two hours with breaks between. Afternoons carry more classes, club sessions, or corporate talks. Evenings go to study group meetings and pre-reads, which is where most of the real work happens. Weekends are rarely empty during core terms, because group deliverables, competitions and recruiting preparation fill them.
Can you have a social life at ISB?
There is an active social calendar of culture nights, sports events, club socials and cohort traditions, and much of it is organised by the Graduate Student Board rather than the administration. The constraint is not the absence of options.
