If you have just been shortlisted and are scrolling through lists of ISB interview questions at midnight, here is an uncomfortable and useful thought: no list will contain your questions. This post is for the Indian applicant with the call in hand, whether you are an IT services engineer, a CA, or a reapplicant, and it argues that the common advice to memorise a question bank is aimed at the wrong target. The ISB interview questions you will face are drawn from your own application.
The structure points to your file, not a script
Start with what ISB itself publishes. The PGP eligibility page describes a seven stage process: submission, verification, interview shortlisting, interview, Admissions Committee review, decision, and a separate scholarship decision. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to an interview of roughly 30 minutes with a panel of faculty, alumni and senior staff, in person in a tier-1 city or on Zoom, and ISB says the two formats are weighted equally. Notice is short, typically 3 to 7 days.
Now add what the admissions director said in a 2022 Clear Admit Q&A. The interviews are resume-based and conducted by alumni, and a pre-interview rating from the application review is combined with a post-interview rating to produce the final rating. In that cycle, about 2,500 applicants were interviewed for a cohort of roughly 900, by more than 500 alumni. That figure is from 2022, so treat it as a scale indicator, not a current statistic.
Put those facts together and the pattern is clear. A reviewer has already formed a view of you from your file. The interviewer, a volunteer alumnus who has read it, is checking whether the person in the room matches that view. The conversation is a verification exercise, and verification questions come from the thing being verified.
Why the question bank is the wrong tool
Question banks are useful for one thing: making you comfortable speaking out loud. Our own 50 question bank exists for that reason. But a bank cannot tell you which of your three leadership stories the interviewer will pick, or which line on your resume they will ask you to unpack.
This is a position we will defend with a qualifier. We do not know the internal rubric, and ISB does not publish one. Applicant guides such as AdmitStreet's interview guide report recurring families of questions (goals, leadership, failure, fit), and those families do show up. But the families are containers. What goes inside is your material. An answer that is polished and generic reads worse than a plain answer that is specific, because the specific one is checkable against the file.
The essays are the first half of the interview
ISB asks for two mandatory 400 word essays, on leadership and on how you learn, plus an optional 250 word essay, and states that the essays should add new information beyond the rest of the application. The same page says applicants complete two on-the-spot essays during the interview itself. The admissions director also advised keeping essays simple and readable, and said evaluators look for clarity of thought, maturity, and examples of leadership and interpersonal skills.
Read that as a preparation checklist. Whatever you claimed in a 400 word essay is now a topic for 10 minutes of questions. If you wrote that you rebuilt a failing vendor relationship, be ready for: what exactly did you say in the first meeting, who disagreed, what number moved, and what you would do differently. The interviewer is not hunting for a trap. They are trying to see whether the story has depth behind it.
If you are an IT services engineer
You are in the biggest group in the pool, which means the interviewer has likely heard a similar profile that week. Your risk is blending in. Pick the one project where you made a business decision, not a technical one: a scope call, a client pushback, a cost number you owned. Rehearse that story at the level of decisions and dates. When asked why an MBA, name the pivot (a product role, a move from services to a product company, an India-track consulting seat) instead of saying you want to move into management.
If you are a reapplicant
Your file is now two files, and the interviewer may have access to the contrast. Expect one question on what changed. Answer it in about a minute with two concrete differences, such as a new role scope, a better test score, or a sharper goal, then stop. Do not relitigate last year. Our post on reapplicant strategy covers how to decide what to change before you reach the interview stage.
What to do in the week you have
Reread your own essays and resume as if you were a stranger and list every claim you would want evidence for. Prepare a short answer for each, with one number and one named person per story. Practise out loud twice, then stop; over-rehearsal makes answers sound memorised, which is the opposite of what a verification conversation rewards. Practise the on-the-spot essay twice under a timer, with a position in the first line and two reasons after it. For the detailed format and sample prompts, see our ISB interview format guide.
Common ISB interview questions applicants are asking
Is there a fixed list of ISB interview questions? No published list exists. Question families recur (goals, leadership, failure, fit), but the specifics follow your application. Prepare stories, not scripts.
Who interviews you at ISB? ISB describes a panel of faculty, alumni and senior staff. The admissions director said in 2022 that alumni conduct the interviews. Expect an alumnus who has read your file.
How long is the interview? ISB says roughly 30 minutes. Plan for the written element on the same occasion too.
Does a Zoom interview hurt my chances? ISB states that in-person and virtual interviews are weighted equally. Choose the one where you will be calmer.
Does the interview matter more than my essays? They are combined. Per the 2022 Q&A, the pre-interview rating is merged with the post-interview rating. A strong interview helps, but it does not erase a thin file, and a good file can be damaged by an answer that contradicts it.
What this means for Indian applicants
The practical conclusion is that interview preparation starts months earlier, at the essay stage. If your essays are vague about what you personally did, the interview will expose it in the first five minutes. The most valuable preparation is an honest audit of your own file: which claims are strong, which are soft, and which you could not defend with a number.
If you are still building that file, begin with a profile evaluation, then rehearse with structured mocks through our interview prep service. The full timeline and stage details are in our ISB PGP admissions guide.
