The ISB CAS runs weeks of prep before placements, and the applicant who skips it pays for it in offers

ISB Career Advancement Services: What the CAS Actually Does in Year One

If you have just accepted your ISB PGP admit and your first worry is not the coursework but whether you will actually convert an offer in a one-year programme, that instinct is correct. ISB career services, run by the Career Advancement Services team known on campus as the CAS, is the machinery that decides how ready you are when recruiters arrive. It starts in your first month, not your last, and the students who treat it as a background service instead of a graded discipline are the ones who scramble in placement week.

What ISB career services actually is

The CAS is not a job-posting board. It is a full department with three working divisions: Learning and Development, Corporate Relations, and Process. Learning and Development builds your candidacy through coaching and skill work. Corporate Relations owns the recruiter pipeline and brings companies to campus. Process runs the logistics of shortlists, interview slots, and offer rollouts. This structure is described in ISB's own placement policy documentation, and understanding it early tells you who to go to for what.

One line matters more than any other, and ISB states it plainly in the PGP FAQ: ISB does not guarantee placement. Every effort is made by the CAS to help you secure your target role, but the conversion is yours to earn. That framing is the difference between a candidate who uses the CAS as a coach and one who waits to be placed.

The year-one CAS timeline, step by step

The ISB career advancement page describes a support system built around one-on-one coaching, career education through professional clubs, and alumni networking. In practice it runs as a sequence, and each step compounds on the previous one.

First, the diagnostic and positioning phase. In the opening weeks you work with career advisors to define a realistic target function and sector, rewrite your resume to ISB's format, and build the story that explains your pivot. For a career-switcher this is the single most valuable step, because a muddled target here shows up as rejections in every later round.

Second, skill building through the professional clubs. The consulting club, finance club, and product and technology clubs run case practice, guesstimate drills, and technical prep, often led by second-term peers and alumni. The CAS partners with these clubs deliberately, so the club calendar is effectively part of your placement prep, not an extracurricular.

Third, mock interviews and dry runs. Before live recruiting, you sit through case and behavioural mocks, get feedback, and iterate. This is where the weeks of prep the CAS front-loads either pay off or expose gaps you can still close.

Fourth, alumni introductions and company research. ISB alumni mentor students through leadership talks and one-on-one conversations, offering insight on career pivots and what specific recruiters value. Using this network to research a firm before its interview is one of the cheapest edges available.

Fifth, live recruiting. Recruiters visit campus, shortlists land by email and appear on the CAS placement portal, and interviews run across multiple days with offers rolled out in waves. By this point your preparation is fixed. The CAS runs the process; your job was the four steps before it.

If you are an IT services engineer targeting consulting

This is the largest single profile in most ISB cohorts, and it is also the most commoditised. Two years at a services firm reads identically to a recruiter across hundreds of applicants. The CAS phase that matters most for you is the first one: positioning. You need a target story that reframes delivery experience as problem-solving and client management, and you need the consulting club's case cycle from week one. If you show up to your first mock still speaking in ticket-resolution language, you have used the CAS badly. Our profile evaluation exists partly to fix this framing before you even arrive on campus.

If you are a CA or finance professional targeting BFSI

Your technical credibility is rarely the problem. The gap is usually breadth and communication, because BFSI and investment roles at ISB test whether you can move from an audit or accounting seat into a commercial one. Lean on the finance club for the technical polish, but spend your one-on-one CAS coaching on the behavioural narrative and on widening your target list beyond the three brands everyone chases. The 2026 recruiter base rewarded students who were open to newer firms, a point the placement data makes concrete below.

What the 2026 numbers say about CAS output

The ISB PGP placement report for 2025 versus 2026 gives the clearest read on what the CAS produces at scale. The Class of 2026 secured 1,117 job offers with an average compensation of 37.29 lakh per annum, roughly an 11 percent rise over the previous cohort, against 808 graduating students. The average package represented a 156 percent jump over the cohort's average pre-ISB pay, which is the number that actually captures career mobility.

That mobility is the real product of ISB career services. In the 2026 cohort, 67 percent of students moved to a new industry and 69 percent shifted to a new function. Consulting, technology, and BFSI stayed dominant, with Accenture extending more than 100 offers, and Mastercard and EY GDS each rolling out more than 40. The recruiter base widened too, with 25 first-time recruiters on campus. A CAS process that keeps adding new employers is one that rewards students willing to look past the obvious names.

Note one honest caveat: ISB reports total offers, offers per student, and sector distribution rather than a single official median salary or a formal placement-rate percentage. Treat any precise median you see quoted elsewhere with caution.

If you are a non-engineer from a tier-2 college

This profile worries most about the CAS, because the fear is that recruiters filter on pedigree before a story ever gets heard. The honest position is that the widening recruiter base helps you, but only if you use the process deliberately. Your positioning phase should lead with outcomes and ownership rather than institution names, since that is the part of your candidacy the CAS coaching can actually strengthen. Prioritise functions where demonstrated results outweigh brand, such as operations, general management, and the fast-growing technology and product roles, rather than the two or three legacy finance seats where prior-brand bias runs deepest. Sit every mock the clubs offer, and ask alumni from similar backgrounds how they framed their pivot. The students from less-known undergraduate colleges who do well at ISB placements are almost never the ones who tried to hide the gap; they are the ones who made the CAS help them build a story strong enough that the gap stopped mattering.

How to use the CAS well, in one line

Front-load the work the CAS cannot do for you. The department can coach, connect, and run the process, but it cannot invent your target or sit your interview. Decide your function early, treat club prep as coursework, and spend alumni time on research rather than reassurance.

What this means for Indian applicants

Read the CAS as a course you are graded on, starting in month one. The students who convert the offers they want are the ones who fix their positioning early, treat the club calendar as mandatory, and use alumni access before interviews rather than after rejections. If you want the fuller picture of how placements sit inside the wider admissions and programme decision, our ISB PGP admissions guide walks through eligibility, rounds, and fit, and it pairs naturally with this placement view.

Getting the positioning right before you land is the part you can control now, months before the CAS clock starts. That is the work our MBA and MiM consulting is built around, and it is also why we push applicants to run an honest self-assessment early rather than wait for the campus process to reveal the gaps.

Common questions

Does ISB guarantee a job? No. ISB states clearly that it does not guarantee placement. The CAS provides coaching, recruiter access, and process support, but the offer is something you convert through your own preparation and interviews.

When does ISB placement prep start? In the first month of the PGP. Positioning, resume work, and club-based case practice begin early, and live recruiting comes only after months of structured preparation.

What is the CAS at ISB? The Career Advancement Services team is ISB's placement department, organised into Learning and Development, Corporate Relations, and Process. It runs everything from one-on-one career coaching to recruiter relationships and interview logistics.

Which sectors hire most at ISB? Consulting, technology, and BFSI have been the dominant hiring sectors, with firms like Accenture, Mastercard, and EY GDS among the largest recruiters in the 2026 cycle.

Can a career-switcher use the CAS to change industry and function? Yes, and the data shows most do. In 2026, 67 percent of students changed industry and 69 percent changed function, which is the clearest evidence that the CAS process is built for pivots.
