If you are 21, holding an offer-in-waiting from a campus placement cell and a half-finished HEC application, and you cannot work out whether the HEC Paris MiM is 18 months, two years or three, you are not being slow. HEC's own pages describe it differently depending on which one you open, and third-party guides add a fourth version. This post sorts out what is verifiable, what it costs an Indian family in 2026 to 2027 terms, and who should honestly look elsewhere.
The length question, answered from HEC's own pages
HEC's main MiM page says the programme runs 18 months: an M1 general management phase, then an M2 specialization phase. The fee schedule bills it as two academic years. And the gap year page says an optional year can sit between the two. Those three statements are consistent once you see the structure, but only just.
The gap year is optional, not mandatory. Some third-party guides call it compulsory, and that is wrong against HEC's own wording. A student can be exempt from the professional gap year by reaching a minimum of 8 weeks of professional experience if admitted directly to M1, or 16 weeks for L3 entrants, by the start of M2. So the "longer than Anglo peers" line in the brochure is real but self-selected: you can finish in roughly two academic years, or stretch to three with an internship year in between.
For an Indian applicant, the useful framing is simple. A one-year UK MiM compresses everything. HEC deliberately gives you a window to work before you specialize, and that window is where European recruiters actually hire you.
What it costs, in numbers you can plan around
HEC's fee page lists a total of EUR 58,970 for the two-year MiM, split as EUR 29,485 for M1 (2027/28) and the same for M2 or the gap year. Each year breaks down into EUR 26,500 academic fees, EUR 1,985 student service fees and EUR 1,000 administrative fees. Two items matter for you specifically. International students pay an additional EUR 2,500 in tuition, and if M2 follows a gap year it is billed at EUR 2,985 for that later year. The application fee is EUR 180, and the seat deposit of EUR 5,000 is due within two weeks of results and is deducted from tuition.
Add it up and an Indian student should plan for roughly EUR 61,500 in tuition alone, around Rs 60 lakh at current-ish exchange rates, before living costs in Paris. HEC mentions merit-based and need-based scholarships for international applicants but publishes no amounts, and lists no India-specific award. Treat scholarship money as upside, not as the base case. Our MiM scholarships guide covers where the realistic funding sits.
The ranking and what it does not tell you
The Financial Times 2025 global MiM ranking placed HEC Paris second, behind St. Gallen and ahead of INSEAD, per Clear Admit's summary. HEC's page now cites a fifth-place worldwide position in the 2026 edition, which tells you rankings move and one year's number should not drive a Rs 60 lakh decision. The same page reports 99 percent employed three months after graduation and an average salary of EUR 118.5K three years out.
Read that last number with discipline. It is a three-years-out, ranking-adjusted figure averaged over a cohort whose graduates mostly work in Paris, London and Switzerland. It is not your first-year package. About 40 percent of students are internationally based and the class draws on 52 nationalities, so you will not be a rarity, but you will also not be competing in a thin pool.
If you are a final-year student at an IIT, NIT or BITS campus
This is the profile HEC is built to absorb. You are 0 to 12 months from graduation, your GMAT is likely in the 650 to 720 range (third-party profiles put admits at 640 to 730, average near 690, and the GRE is accepted), and your risk is not academics but narrative. The committee reads hundreds of strong engineers. What separates you is a specific reason for management plus a specific reason for Paris. An internship in a product or strategy role that you can describe in numbers beats a fourth hackathon.
If you are a commerce or economics graduate with a CA or CFA in progress
Your advantage is that the M2 specializations in finance and economics map directly onto your preparation. HEC lists eight M2 tracks, including International Finance, Economics and Finance, Quantitative Economics and Finance, and Marketing, plus an entrepreneurship track. HEC advertises dual degrees, including one with IIM Ahmedabad, which is relevant if you want a future route back to India. Be careful with the claimed count: the page says "over 30" but lists eight specific ones, so verify the pairing you want before building your plan on it.
If you have two or more years of work experience
Ask yourself whether you are in the wrong degree. The MiM is a pre-experience product. With three years behind you, a one-year MBA at a place like INSEAD or HEC's own MBA will pay you for the experience you have, and our MiM versus MBA guide for Indian engineers walks through that math. The MBA abroad hub maps the experienced-hire options.
The France-specific caveat nobody puts in the brochure
A MiM from HEC does not buy you a French job; it buys you access to a recruiting pipeline and a post-study permit that lets you search in France. Rules on the permit and its fees have changed in recent years, so check Campus France and the prefecture pages for the current term before you commit. What does not change is the math. If you cannot see yourself working in Europe, or you will not invest in even conversational French, the HEC premium is hard to justify against cheaper MiM options such as the ESSEC MiM or a UK programme like the LBS Masters in Management.
Common questions Indian applicants are asking
Is the HEC Paris MiM 18 months or two years? HEC describes the core as 18 months across M1 and M2 but bills two academic years. With the optional gap year the calendar stretches further. Plan for two years of fees and two to three calendar years, depending on the internship route you choose.
Is the HEC gap year compulsory? No. HEC's own page calls it optional and offers an exemption once you have 8 or 16 weeks of professional experience, depending on your entry point. Several third-party sites say otherwise; trust HEC's page.
Do I need French for HEC Paris MiM from India? Admission runs in English, so French is not a hard requirement. It becomes a requirement for the internships and jobs that make the degree pay, so budget time for it.
What GMAT score should I target for HEC MiM? There is no published cut-off. Third-party profiles show admits between 640 and 730 with an average near 690, and the GRE is accepted. Aim to clear that band, then spend your remaining effort on the essays.
Is HEC MiM worth Rs 60 lakh for an Indian student? Only if Europe is your target market and you can convert the internship window into a return offer. If your plan is to return to India within two years, test the return against an Indian MBA later.
