Booth and Kellogg are both Chicago MBAs, but Indian applicants are not really choosing between the same two schools

Booth vs Kellogg for the Indian Applicant in Chicago in 2026

If you have a 730 GMAT, five years at a Bengaluru product company or a Mumbai bank, and two Chicago-area tabs open at 1 a.m., the question in your head is probably "which one is stronger?" Wrong question. This Booth vs Kellogg MBA comparison takes a firm position: for an Indian applicant the two schools are near-identical on headline pay and quite different on where you will actually land after the visa filters are applied. Pick on the second, not the first.

The headline numbers say tie, and that is the trap

Per Clear Admit's Class of 2025 report, Kellogg graduates reported a median base salary of $175,000 and a $30,000 median signing bonus, with 88% receiving an offer within three months. Booth's own employment report shows an identical $175,000 median base, a $30,000 median sign-on bonus and 89.1% with offers. If you stopped at the median you would flip a coin.

Do not stop at the median. Medians hide the industry mix, and the industry mix is what decides whether your specific goal is reachable.

Where the two schools genuinely diverge

The same data shows the split. Kellogg placed 38% in consulting, 21% in financial services, 19% in technology and 6% in healthcare. Booth placed 36.7% in consulting, 31.6% in financial services and 14.1% in technology, according to the Booth report as summarised by Clear Admit.

Read that carefully. Consulting is a wash: Booth sent 52 graduates to BCG, 35 to McKinsey and 30 to Bain, and Kellogg's top employer list also opens with Bain. If your only goal is MBB, the recruiter overlap is heavy and the schools are close substitutes. The real gap sits elsewhere. Booth carries roughly ten more percentage points in finance (investment banking, investment management and private equity each show up in its top function list). Kellogg carries roughly five more points in tech and a healthcare and consumer-goods pipeline that shows up in employers such as Adobe, General Mills and DaVita.

So the popular claim that the two "compete for the same recruiters" is only true for one industry. For finance-bound applicants Booth is the stronger Chicago bet. For product management, marketing, healthcare and CPG-bound applicants, Kellogg is.

The class you will sit in

Both classes for 2027 look alike on paper, per Clear Admit's Kellogg and Booth profiles. Kellogg enrolled 534 students, 37% international, with a 733 average on the classic GMAT (687 on Focus) and 5.1 years of experience. Booth enrolled 635, also 37% international, with 736 on the classic GMAT (670 on Focus), a 3.6 average GPA and five years of experience. Booth received 5,876 applications, about 13% more than the year before.

Two implications for you. Booth is roughly 100 seats bigger, so its Indian cohort is somewhat easier to find and network with. And the applicant pool is growing faster than the seats, which means "safety" is the wrong word for either school.

If you are a strategy consultant or an ex-Big 4 advisor

Either school works, so choose on how you learn. Booth's curriculum is famously flexible, with very few fixed requirements, which suits someone who already knows exactly what they want to study. Kellogg leans on team-based work and a marketing-and-management culture, which suits someone who wants to practise collaboration on the way to MBB. You will not lose an MBB offer by picking the "wrong" one of these two.

If you are an investment banker, PE associate or CFA

Lean Booth. Its 31.6% finance share, and the fact that private equity and investment management both feature among its top post-MBA functions, means the finance recruiters know the school and return to it. Kellogg does place people at J.P. Morgan (it is on the top employer list), but finance is a support act there rather than the headline. Our related read, Wharton vs Booth for the Indian finance applicant, covers the step up if finance is your only goal.

If you are a product manager, marketer or healthcare professional

Lean Kellogg. A 19% technology share plus a visible healthcare and consumer-goods pipeline is a better fit for a career in product or brand than a school whose second-largest industry is finance. For an Indian software engineer with product ambitions, this is the single clearest reason to pick Kellogg over Booth.

The 2026 policy layer nobody puts in the brochure

Both schools report about 95% of jobs in the US or close to it: Booth shows 5.1% overseas and Kellogg 6% international. That is a US job market, and the US job market for international graduates carries a September 2025 H-1B proclamation and a debated F-1 duration-of-status rule. We unpack the cost in our H-1B fee analysis for Indian MBA applicants. The practical point is this: employers with a large and established international-hiring machine are your friend. Consulting and large finance firms have one; a small healthcare or CPG employer may not sponsor at all. Whichever school you choose, test your target employers on sponsorship before you commit.

What this means for Indian applicants

Decide your industry first, then choose the school. Finance goes Booth. Product, marketing, healthcare and CPG go Kellogg. MBB is a coin flip, so break the tie on culture and city preference. Then look at where you sit on the applicant curve: with 37% international at both schools, an Indian applicant is competing in an international pool that both admissions teams already treat as high-volume. Our Booth and Kellogg admissions guides show how each school reads an Indian profile, and a profile evaluation will tell you which of the two your file actually suits.

Common questions

Is Booth or Kellogg better for MBB consulting?

Neither has a structural edge. Booth reported 52 BCG, 35 McKinsey and 30 Bain hires in the Class of 2025, and Kellogg's top employer list starts with Bain. Kellogg's consulting share is marginally higher (38% against 36.7%). Pick based on other factors, and prepare for case interviews from the first term at either school.

Is Kellogg or Booth easier to get into?

Neither is easy. Booth's 5,876 applications for 635 seats and Kellogg's 534 seats both imply admit rates that leave little slack, and average GMAT scores are within a few points of each other. Fit and story matter more than the small difference in stats.

Which has the better salary?

They tie on the median: $175,000 base and a $30,000 signing bonus at each. Individual outcomes depend on industry, with finance and consulting offers clustering higher than the median.

Which gives an Indian applicant a better chance of a US job?

The US job outcome depends on the employer's sponsorship record more than the school. Both schools place about 95% of graduates in the US or near it, so both are US-market bets.

Should I pick Chicago over Wharton or Columbia?

Only if the specific industry and culture match. Chicago is a smaller city market than New York, and the New York schools have deeper access to banking and PE. Choose on your target function, not on rank.
