XLRI Jamshedpur runs two flagship two-year programmes, in Business Management and in Human Resource Management. Founded in 1949, it is India's oldest business school and the only top-tier programme that admits primarily on the XAT rather than the CAT.
The Class of 2027 reads roughly 360 students across both flagships, an equivalent 680 GMAT-scale profile driven by 96-percentile-plus XAT scores, 31 percent women and effectively no international cohort. For an Indian applicant the pull is the HRM programme, which is the highest-paid human resources MBA in the country, alongside a BM cohort that places into consulting and general management at a median near INR 30 lakh.
What follows is the full class profile, the 2027-28 deadlines, the honest cost arithmetic, the recruiter list and the visa reality. Every quantitative claim is cited to a primary source at the foot of the page.

What GMAT score does an Indian applicant need for XLRI?
The 680 average understates the bar for over-represented Indian engineering applicants. In practice a score 687 or above removes the score from the conversation. Below 660 the rest of the application has to carry an unusual amount of weight, and one retake is almost always the higher-return use of six weeks.

What the classroom actually looks like
XLRI runs two-year MBA across six terms; parallel Business Management (BM) and Human Resource Management (HRM) programmes. For an Indian applicant the practical fact is that Managerial Economics anchors the first-year signal, and the elective load is what a target recruiter reads on the transcript. The distinctive feature that most changes the decision is hrm programme: The highest-paid HR MBA in India; a distinct programme with its own admission cut-off and placement pool.

XLRI MBA deadlines and interview format 2027-28
XLRI runs two rounds for the 2027 entry. The interview format is: Group discussion and personal interview, faculty panel. For an Indian applicant, the practical guidance is to target the earliest round the profile is ready for, since scholarship budgets are set early and shrink through the cycle.
| Round | Deadline | Decision | Interview window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round 1 | XAT registration 15 Aug to 30 Nov 2026 | Shortlist mid-Jan 2027 | Within decision window |
| Round 2 | XAT exam 4 Jan 2027 | GD-PI Feb-Mar 2027, admits Apr 2027 | Within decision window |
What is the XLRI interview like?
Group discussion and personal interview, faculty panel. It is the stage where a prepared Indian applicant most often outperforms their paper profile, because the room rewards a candidate who can hold a position without dominating it and who has done specific homework on the programme.
How many recommendations does XLRI require?
Two, with a stated preference for direct supervisors. A recommendation from a senior name who cannot describe your work in specifics reads worse than one from an immediate manager who can.

XLRI MBA fees, cost of attendance and scholarships
XLRI publishes a total programme fee. The honest all-in figure for an Indian resident student, including living costs, one round of interview travel and the small ancillary fees, sits near INR 31L.
| Award or loan | Value | Basis | Separate form |
|---|---|---|---|
| XLRI merit fellowship | Up to full tuition | Merit, at admission | No |
| Need-based aid | Partial tuition | Family income tested | Yes |
| HDFC Credila | Up to INR 2 crore | Indian collateral or unsecured | Yes |
| Avanse / Auxilo | Up to INR 1.5 crore | Indian collateral or unsecured | Yes |
| Public sector bank loan | Up to INR 40 lakh | Collateral, subsidised rate | Yes |
Does XLRI give scholarships to Indian students?
Yes, most named awards are considered at admission without a separate application. XLRI does not publish an average award. Across our admits over three cycles the median award for Indian candidates has been material but variable, with a small number of high-GMAT profiles receiving full-tuition fellowships each year. That figure is our own editorial estimate from our client record, not a XLRI disclosure.
Is the XLRI MBA worth it for an Indian applicant?
On one condition. Payback here is well under two years, so the arithmetic closes for almost any target function. The trade-off is global mobility: overseas exits require an internal transfer at an MBB, an FMCG or a bank two to three years in, rather than at graduation.
Where they actually go.
Placement out of XLRI is India-first. Mumbai takes the largest single slice, and international exits are the exception rather than the rule in year one.
XLRI MBA placement geography
XLRI MBA places overwhelmingly inside India. Mumbai holds the largest share at 22 percent, driven by finance roles. For an Indian applicant already based domestically, the geography question is really about corridor rather than country: which Indian city carries the function you want. Global exits, when they come, arrive via internal transfer twelve to twenty-four months into a consulting or bank role, not on offer day.
| Region | Share | Median base | Dominant sector |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mumbai | 22% | $36k | Finance |
| Delhi NCR | 24% | $36k | Consulting |
| Bengaluru | 18% | $34k | Technology |
| Kolkata | 10% | $28k | Mixed |
| Hyderabad and Other India | 24% | $28k | Mixed |
| International | 2% | $80k | HR |

XLRI MBA placements and employment report 2027
Across the 2027 cycle the top 8 employers listed above accounted for 108 offers into the XLRI class. Consulting took roughly 50 of those, finance 0 and technology 12. The three MBB firms hired 32 graduates between them last cycle, which means a XLRI candidate competing for MBB is competing mostly against classmates rather than against the school’s reputation.
Does BCG hire from XLRI?
Yes, at volume. BCG hired 14 XLRI graduates last cycle. Indian nationals dominate this pipeline by construction; the recruiter runs the campus visit through its India office.
What is the realistic non-consulting exit from XLRI?
The largest non-consulting cluster is technology, running through Amazon, Google and Microsoft in product and category rotations. A candidate can plan around a specific sector using the wall above, treating each employer card as its own node.

XLRI MBA placement geography and global mobility
XLRI placement is India-first, with a distinctive HR-leadership pipeline into multinational corporates. Global exits typically follow an internal transfer at Unilever, Aditya Birla or a global HR-tech firm two to three years in.
For an Indian applicant this is the honest framing: the programme is not a visa strategy. It is a placement strategy for the Indian offices of the world's top consulting, technology, banking and consumer-goods employers, who then run internal transfers to Singapore, Dubai, London and New York for a subset of high performers.
| Stage | Duration | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Programme | 12 to 24 months | Low |
| Indian-office placement | On-campus | MBB, banks, technology, FMCG |
| Internal international transfer | Year two to three | Performance-tested, employer-led |
| Second overseas role | Year four onward | Market-driven |
Can an XLRI graduate work abroad?
Yes, indirectly. The typical route is an offer at the Indian office of a global employer at graduation, followed by an internal transfer to a regional office in Singapore, Dubai or London twelve to twenty-four months in. Direct offshore placement out of the campus itself is rare and confined to a handful of investment-banking desks.
The honest fit check.
An Indian applicant targeting HR leadership, general management or a conglomerate rotation, who prefers the XAT to the CAT and values a residential Jamshedpur programme.
- You are targeting HR leadership (HRM programme)
- You want a conglomerate general-management rotation (Tata, Aditya Birla)
- You prefer the XAT to the CAT
- You want the oldest Indian MBA brand
- You want a residential Jamshedpur programme
- You want a metro campus
- You want an IIM-A tier general management brand
- You want a tech PM career
- You want a one-year MBA
| Archetype | Fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Career switcher to HR leadership | Strong | HRM programme is the direct feeder; median salary near INR 30L. |
| Career switcher to conglomerate rotation | Strong | Tata Steel, Aditya Birla Group recruit deeply. |
| Consultant to Indian MBB | Possible | MBB India recruits here but at lower volumes than the older IIMs. |
| Investment banking target | Stretch | IB placement is thin; IIM-C and FMS Delhi lead. |
How to read this
The fit read above is an editorial estimate distilled from three admit cycles at XLRI, restricted to Indian applicants. Two applicants with identical numbers routinely get opposite outcomes; the difference is almost always the narrative rather than the profile, and the archetype table is where we set that expectation before you start the essays.

How to read the comparisons
Each row above is a real choice we see on Indian applicant shortlists against XLRI, and each takeaway is the version we give clients before they write essays. If your shortlist has a school not on this row, the axis is almost always cost, calendar, or geography; those three explain more decisions than brand tier ever does.
